ทัลคัม (Talcum) คือ หินทัลก์ (Talc) ที่ถูกนำมาบดจนละเอียด หรือรู้จักในชื่อ แร่หินสบู่ (Soapstone) มีคุณสมบัติทำให้ลื่น และดูดความชื้นได้ดี ทัลคัมมีหลายประเภท หลายเกรด เพื่อใช้ในแต่ละอุตสาหกรรมที่มีความต้องการที่แตกต่างกันไป ซึ่งทัลคัมแต่ละเกรด จะแตกต่างกันตามระดับความบริสุทธิ์ ความขาว และความละเอียด ประโยชน์ของทัลคัม สามารถใช้ในอุตสาหกรรมการผลิตได้หลากหลายประเภท ได้แก่ กระดาษ, พลาสติก, สี, งานเคลือบผิว, ยาง, สายไฟฟ้า, งานเซรามิก, อาหาร, ยา, เครื่องสำอาง, เป็นต้น ทัลคัมใช้ในการผลิตเครื่องสำอาง โดยจะใช้ทัลคัมบดละเอียดที่สุด ทำให้แห้ง แล้วฆ่าเชื้ออย่างดี ถือเป็นทัลคัมที่มีค่าความบริสุทธิ์ อยู่ในเกรดที่ปลอดภัย ปราศจาก แอสเบสตอส (Asbestos) หรือ แร่ใยหิน ที่เป็นอันตรายต่อร่างกาย ก่อนนำมาผสมส่วนประกอบอื่น ๆ เพื่อทำเครื่องสำอาง เช่น แป้งเด็ก บลัชออน โคลนพอกหน้า ฯลฯ การผลิตกระเบื้อง และเซรามิก จะเติมทัลคัมเพื่อช่วยคุมค่าการขยายตัวเมื่อโดนความร้อนของเนื้อกระเบื้องและเซรามิก ทัลคัมยังใช้แทนคาร์บอเนตในการผลิตกระเบื้อง เพื่อช่วยให้การเผาเสร็จไวขึ้น ใช้เวลาน้อยลง และลดช่วงเวลาการเย็นตัว การผลิตของใช้บนโต๊ะอาหาร และเครื่องสุขภัณฑ์ จะเติมทัลคัม เพื่อช่วยป้องกันความเสียหายที่เกิดจาก การเปลี่ยนแปลงอุณหภูมิอย่างกะทันหัน และใช้ในขั้นตอนการเคลือบ ซึ่งใช้ได้ทั้งการเคลือบแบบผิวด้านและผิวมัน ทัลคัมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการผลิตวัสดุทนไฟ (Refractory ที่เป็นเนื้อคอร์เดียไรท์ ที่ผลิตจากการนำดินขาว ดินดำ อลูมิน่า และทัลคัม มาผสมรวมกัน โดยมีการควบคุมค่าความละเอียด ให้มีขนาดที่แตกต่างกัน เพื่อให้มีคุณสมบัติทนทานต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงเนื่องจากความร้อนได้ดีขึ้น ในการผลิตอิฐ ก็มีการใส่ทัลคัมเพื่อเป็นตัวหล่อลื่น ทำให้ผิวอิฐเรียบมากขึ้น แต่จะไม่เติมมากเพราะจะส่งผลต่อการขยายตัวของอิฐ ทำให้อิฐแห้งช้าระหว่างอบ จนอาจเกิดการแตกร้าวได้ ในสายไฟฟ้าที่มีฉนวนและเปลือกแบบพีวีซี ชนิด NYY และ VCT จะมีการใช้ผงทัลคัมในการหุ้มเปลือกสายไฟ เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้ชั้นของฉนวน กับเปลือกชั้นในและชั้นนอกของสายไฟฟ้าติดกัน เมื่อใช้งานก็ปอกเปลือกสายไฟได้ง่ายขึ้น ประโยชน์ของทัลคัมสำหรับอุตสาหกรรมงานหล่อ มีการใช้เพื่อผลิตชิ้นงานไฟเบอร์กลาส หรือเรซิ่น ทัลคัมมีลักษณะเป็นผงที่มีความละเอียดมาก มีสีขาวและให้ผิวชิ้นงานที่ละเอียดกว่าการผสมผงแคลเซียมมาก ใช้ผสมเพื่อเพิ่มเนื้อ เพื่อให้ทึบแสง ลดการหดตัว เพิ่มแรงยึดเกาะ ใช้ทำเป็นวัสดุรองพื้น เหมาะสำหรับงานโป๊วแต่งเก็บรายละเอียดชิ้นงาน บนต้นแบบที่เป็นไม้ ปูน โพลีเอสเตอร์เรซิ่น ใช้ได้กับน้ำยาเรซิน ทั้งเกรดหล่อและเกรดไฟเบอร์ แล้วขัดผิวให้เรียบเป็นมัน หรือทำเป็นกาวเชื่อมรอยต่อชิ้นงานไฟเบอร์กลาส ทัลคัมผสมน้ำยาเรซิ่น จะช่วยเพิ่มน้ำหนัก และความหนาของเนื้อเรซิ่นได้ สามารถใช้แทนสีโป๊ว (เรซิ่นโป๊ว)ได้ จึงเป็นที่นิยมในอุตสากรรมการผลิตเรซิ่น และการซ่อมชิ้นส่วนรถยนต์ที่ทำมาจากไฟเบอร์ ใช้ได้เสมือนสีโป๊วรถยนต์จริง นอกจากนี้ทัลคัมยังมีประโยชน์อีกมาก เช่น เป็นส่วนประกอบในสารหล่อลื่นแม่พิมพ์ ที่ใช้ขึ้นรูปหล่อโลหะ ใช้เป็นตัวเติม (filler) ในการผลิตสี กาว พลาสติก และ กระดาษ รวมทั้งใช้ในการผลิตปุ๋ยและยาฆ่าแมลงได้อีกด้วย

Talc, or Talcum, is a clay mineral, composed of Hydrated Magnesium Silicate with the chemical formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. Talc is used in many industries, including paper making, plastic, paint, coatings (for metal casting molds), rubber, electric cable, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, etc. and A coarse grayish-green high-talc rock is soapstone or steatite, used for stoves, sinks, electrical switchboards, etc. It is often used for surfaces of laboratory table tops and electrical switchboards because of its resistance to heat, electricity, and acids. In finely ground form, talc finds use as a cosmetic (talcum powder), as a lubricant, and as a filler in paper manufacture. It is used to coat the insides of inner tubes and rubber gloves during manufacture to keep the surfaces from sticking. Talcum powder, with heavy refinement, has been used in baby powder, an astringent powder used to prevent diaper rash (nappy rash). Talc is also used as food additive or in pharmaceutical products as a glidant. In medicine, talc is used as a pleurodesis agent to prevent recurrent pleural effusion or pneumothorax.
